From September 19 till September 24, 2011 Almaty will host VII International Film Festival “Eurasia”. Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, JSC “Kazakhfilm” named after Sh. Aimanov, Cinematographer’s Union of the Republic of Kazakhstan and “Eurasia” IFF Directorate are the organizers of this year’s Festival.

«Eurasia» – is the only Kazakhstani film festival working in accordance with FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations) regulations and enlisted in the world film festival catalogue. “Eurasia’s” top level is marked not only by film directors and producers showcasing their films here, but also distributors and sellers which consider the Kazakhstani film festival as a professional set for promotion of the best films.

In 2011 an important change concerned the competition of the festival. Lately this section implied the competition of the films from Central Asia. This year, “Eurasia” broadens its boundaries and turns back to wide international competition showcasing “fresh” films from Europe, Asia and CIS countries. The following will be the grand awards at the festival this year: Grand Prix for Best Film (awarded to producer), Best Directing, and the awards for best male/female performance.

Along with the international competition the following programs will be presented at VII “Eurasia” IFF:

Dynamically developing Kazakh cinema – films of late 2010 and 2011.

International film festival award winning films.

Virtual West.

Changing East.

The Echo of Venice film festival.

Documentary films program presented by the embassy of the United States.

“Eurasia-2011” International Jury will be headed by renowned South Korean film director Kim Ki-duk. His latest film “Arirang” will be showcased in the Special Event section. The jury board will also include one of the most distinguished Japanese film directors Yoichi Sai (in 2007 his film “Blood and Bones” was included in the competition of “Eurasia”), people’s artist of Russia, film director Vladimir Khotinenko, popular French actor, film director and composer Gilles Marchand, whose familiar “Black Heaven” will be screened during this year’s out-of-competition programme “Virtual West”.

It’s noteworthy that owing to the high level of programs and world standards required from competition film festivals, it’s been already three years that prestigious film critics jury – FIPRESSI and NETPAC work at “Eurasia” along with the international jury.

The importance of the changes in competition program involves the fact that Kazakhstani films will be competing of the leading foreign motion pictures. It’s notable due to those dynamic processes occurring in Kazakhstan’s film industry nowadays.

The year 2010 in domestic feature film production marked new perspectives in creation of viewing audience films and the turn to the new generation of film directors. For example, “Eurasia’s” last year competition selected two films out of 15 Kazakhstani films. Those were the motion pictures by A. Satayev (“Strayed”) and by F. Sharipov (“The Tale of the Pink Hare”).

However the year 2011, judging by the amount of films (more then twenty) and their dissimilarity, should become critical in accelerating dynamics of Kazakhstani film-process development.

From among the films completed in this year we should mark the film by R. Abdrashev “The Sky of My Childhood” spirited by the aesthetics of bio-epics; films such as “The Return to the “A” by E. Konchalovsky and “Liquidator” by A. Satayev are shot in the best traditions of action films; historical film by S. Tauekelov “Zheruik”, children’s films “Anshi Bala” by Ye. Nurmukhambetov and “Kishkentai” by D. Salamat. Film “Gakku” by G. Nassyrov, “Zhel Kyzy” by Zh. Poshanov, and of course the comics-film “SuperBakha” by T. Baitukenov and T. Kasymzhanov are distinguished by the search for non-standard cinematic solutions. Films by D. Omirbayev “Student” and “Sunny Days” by N. Turebayev reflect the loyalty to cinema as a pure image communicating author’s thought and feelings about the character and time. The idea of creating virtual and real worlds belongs to A. Karakulov (“Unreal Love”), and time transitions as well as the quest for personal space are offered by A. Yerzhanov (“Realtors”).

Within the framework of “Eurasia”, the organizers offer the guests of the festival an opportunity to watch Kazakhstani films in full scope as well as a

chance to the viewers to yet again meet the beloved actors and film makers.

Traditionally, the world film celebrities will attend “Eurasia” IFF. This year, the French Oscar award winning actress Juliette Binoche is one of the main guests of the festival as well as American actor, producer and writer Owen Wilson – the star of the films as “Shanghai Noon”, “Wedding Crashers”, and “You, Me and Dupree”.

The working sessions of “Eurasia-2011” have several round table discussions planned including the discussions with program directors (selectors) from top world film festivals as well as the co- production market – the pitching of projects which is to be held by one of the major European companies.

The festival headquarters, as in the last year, will be located in the multifunctional complex Almaty Towers which includes five screening rooms and the venues for all festival events and meetings.

It is a great pleasure for us to announce that the VII «Eurasia» International Film Festival will be held in Almaty from 19 to 24 September 2011.

«Eurasia» international film festival has one important mission which is not always marked by the journalists. Like the discoverers of new lands, it is not only skillfully maneuvering in an universally accepted Eurasian stream of movies, but also stimulates the domestic film industry to capture its own «territory» in the film industry with new ideas, movies, and names of filmmakers.

The year 2010 became the year of designation of new perspectives in the creation of the film audience and turning to a new generation of filmmakers in Kazakh Feature Film industry. For example, during the last competitive program of «Eurasia» IFF two films of young film directors, Akhan Satayev’s «Strayed» and Farhat Sharipov’s «A Tale of a pink bunny” were selected from the great number of films. If we look at the number of the films produced – there are more than twenty movies, so we can say that the Kazakh film industry is actively developing nowadays.

Nowadays the interest in cinema makes national producers and directors move away from the classical shooting methods, to experiment and search (with the help of space, color, light, assembly gluing, stretching and fastening the rhythm of new technical capabilities of the camera), for a new form of representational content film. New game tapes to become more dynamic by the rhythm, and more laconic by the semantic and film image. And most importantly, different movies are shot and demonstrated, which are in competition with each other is obliged to give something new and original in every area of film language, whether it is an image or structure of the action. Because now classic and art-house, commercial and author cinema face each other, in the content – the objective reality and subjective worlds of conventional characters, in the image- the Soviet traditions and the visual capabilities of modern cinema world.

For example, from the films completed this year – Rustem Abdrashev’s film «My childhood skies», that is permeated with the atmosphere and the aesthetics of the modern world epic biographical films. The movie of Yegor Konchalovsky «Return to» A » and Akyhan Satayev’s » Liquidator » are created according to the strong laws of the Hollywood action-movies. The historical movie of Slambek Taukelov – “Zheruik” is shot in the fine traditions of the Soviet Historical Film styles and tell us about the fate of repatriated Soviet Kazakhstan Koreans and other nationalities.

Erlan Nurmuhambetov’s film «Anshi Bala” continues the transformation of children’s films of Kazakhstan, in which the boy who lives in the modern society family has something common with the hero of Abdollah Karsakbayev’s film – «My name is Kozha». Little Hero and his view of contemporary reality are the main objects of studying and of the director Daniyar Salamat («Kishkentay»), but in his film this hero is not a child.

The search for the unconventional solutions to the construction of dramatic films can be noted in the following films: Gaziz Nassyrov’s «Gakku», Tulegen Baytukenov’s and Timur Kasymzhanov’s national film comics «Superbakha» and Zhasulan Poshanov’s «Zhel kyzy» with the traditions of television sketch.

The devotion of cinematography to the pure images that reveal the author’s thoughts and feelings about the hero and the times in which he lives, will be presented in the Darezhan Omirbaev’s film «Student» and Nariman Turebayev’s «Sunny Days».

The idea of creating the virtual and the real world in the national film belongs to Amir Karakulov («Unreal love»). And the idea of transitions in time and search for your own space is offered by Adilkhan Erzhanov («Rieltors»). The latter two films are marked not only by the creating of multistructural field that is made out of time and reality but also by an original visual solution.

Today, the modern Kazakh cinema, albeit with flaws and being impulsive, seeks for their own iconic shape and its original style with the judicious use of film language, which would correspond to foreign film standards and would be attractive to natiobal and foreign audience. And this search creates new taste preferences, exaggerating not the hunger but the appetite for good films.

As a consequence the changes are happening also in the minds of our national audience. The beauty of modern Kazakh cinema is not only in the forward movement of the film creation, but it’s mandatory release on the screen. Kazakhstan audience is largely more informed. Kazakhstan audience is now a critic and judge of the new films as it discusses the national film premieres with the great passion and concern on the film sites and web-portals giving the verdicts for the films.

Dynamics of Kazakh film industry development makes us say that the movie not only exists (the beginning of independence), and itself develops (a decade ago), but is currently in the process of forming an active search for the formation of independent and recognizable movies in the world of cinema culture.
